One of the biggest problems for guitar players is inability to control unwanted guitar string noise as they try to play guitar fast. If you are not careful about muting the strings that you are NOT playing, particularly if you use a lot of distortion/gain, your guitar playing can become sloppy very quickly, leaving you feeling helpless about how to solve this problem.
The solution is to use a special lead guitar technique known as thumb muting. To use your thumb to mute unwanted guitar string noise, place your picking hand’s thumb on the strings below the one you are on. This will keep the other strings from ringing while you play. Check out this guitar picking technique video to see for yourself how you can use this technique to improve your lead guitar playing.
